Being ecotile’s representative for North West England and Scotland, Chris Kenny is responsible for visiting and liaising with clients in those areas. When contracting firm RBS Construction contacted him looking for a quote for 4,000sqm on behalf of Audi, we knew we had to have the job. However, it proved to be a bit of a special case – They wanted to lay it outside...
Ecotile manufacture flooring that is designed specifically for indoor use. Direct sunlight hitting the tiles raises their core temperature and affects their expansion and retraction rates. If different areas of the tiles are exposed to light, it can cause an uneven surface, which is an obvious problem. Car manufacturing firm Audi hold an annual ‘Festival of Speed’ display in the grounds of Goodwood House. They use this event to showcase their motors and, to ensure their guests had the best possible all-round experience, they wanted us!
As thrilled as we were to have been chosen over other, perhaps more obvious, candidates, now came the big question: How? How would we make this project work, with tiles that are designed to ‘live’ under a roof? What followed was a further series of meetings, involving not only the production director Michael Ollivere, but also the managing director, James Gedye. The job was beginning to seem like a measure of ecotile’s worth! An eventual decision was made: to stick the tiles onto pieces of plywood using adhesive, thereby reducing as much movement as possible between the tiles. In addition to this, Audi were advised to opt for a light colour to ensure overall heat absorption was kept to a minimum. Being a one off event, this short term solution seemed ideal.
Subsequent to this complex string of discussions, 4,000sqm of Durbar textured tiles were collected by RBS’s installation team and transported to Goodwood. They were then lowered by crane and stuck down. The overall finish was as smart and professional as any indoor installation we have completed. Audi are now in the process of ordering tiles for an exhibition in Munich, confirming ecotile’s determination to provide a quality product, however big or (seemingly) impossible the job, which just keeps customers coming back time and time again.
